Biography

Before the Stage

Long before there was a stage, there was a living room. Hela Melki grew up in Tunisia listening to her father — a singer and keyboardist who performed in English and French — and sat in on his band rehearsals long before she ever sang for an audience of her own.

She started singing in primary school in 1987, joined her high school's musical group in 1993, and by the late '90s was sweeping local, national, and regional competitions across Tunisia — a string of top-ranking wins between 1998 and 2001 that turned a childhood pastime into a clear calling.

Her recording career began with the original "Hokm Ezzaman" in 2003, followed by "Nghir Alik" in 2005 and a Medal of Culture from Tunisia's Minister in 2006. She recorded the album Ghazelni with Maestro Abdelhakim Belgaied in 2009, then crossed borders with Kuwaiti composer Mohammed AlRowaished on "Andak Garh" in 2014.

Then, in 2018, after years away from the spotlight, she returned in the biggest way possible: MBC's The Voice – Ahla Saut, where she became one of just four finalists out of more than a hundred contestants — introducing her voice to hundreds of millions of viewers across the Arab world and beyond.
